Europe, with and without migration
Here is a tool from The Guardian demonstrating Europe's demographic future with and without migration.
Anti-immigration politics is on the rise across the EU, as shown by the gains made by far-right parties in the 2024 elections. Meanwhile, the anti-immigration Alternative fรผr Deutschland (AfD) is polling second in the run-up to the German federal election this month.
But those wanting to shut Europeโs borders must contend with a stark demographic reality: the continentโs native population is expected to fall sharply over the next century in an era of low birth rates.
Migration has pros and cons (the article touches on these) but some degree of immigration will almost certainly have to be part of any solution - particularly in rural areas which will otherwise suffer the twin shocks of low birthrates and net internal migration (as native born young people leave for better opportunities in the cities).
